New house plans - Posted by Steve Mount
Well, Karen and I decided to take the plunge, inspired by Rob and Bridget and some new homes we saw in South Carolina. We're moving. Or at least, that's the plan. We have put a holding deposit on a piece of land in our town, on one of the last lots in a development nearby. Many of the kids' friends live in the development or the one next to it, so for them, it will be perfect.
A few things have to happen, though. 1. We have to pick a plan. In 3000 square feet, we want to squeeze five bedrooms, a largish family room, and an office. All other rooms are negotiable. We've looked at dozens of plans, but have not hit on just the right one yet. Once we decide, we'll meet with the builder and see if what we want fits into our budget. 2. We have to sell our house. The realtor thinks it will go quickly - but we don't want it to go too quickly. The builder can break ground any time after the 1st of July, and needs about 3 months to build. The perfect plan would have us find a buyer and close just days before we close on the new house. 3. We have to be sure what we think we can afford we can actually afford. That's the bank's job.
We plan to go over more plans this weekend, and hopefully narrow it down to a perfect one, or one that the builder can make perfect. Assuming nothing falls apart, we are hoping to move by Thanksgiving. Whew, it is like a whirlwind. Hopefully we can enjoy the ride.

That's exciting news, Steve. I'm flabbergasted at how quickly things can move along. I'm sure you'll be happy with the move. That's lots of space you're talking about and you're sure to enjoy it as your family grows up. The finances always work out and what might be a squeeze at first becomes normal after the first year. It's great to have the flexibility of design you're talking about and not just buy an already built house. Congatulations on your decision and best of luck with all the details. I'll be very interested in how it all goes as buying our last (I hope) new home (or two) in about five years is consuming my imagination these days. And we haven't even picked a STATE yet!
Be sure to look into your GREEN building options - it's the wave of the future and will help keep the planet safe for your kids.
